I’ve been talking with my fellow-90’s kids lately. The 90’s have been on my mind.
Maybe because our hard-earned skills are pushed to the brink of obsolescence. Maybe because the 2020’s feel like a sci-fi dystopian film without the great production design. Or maybe some hidden mid-life homing beacon is activating inside 90’s kids and calling on us all to connect and counterbalance the hellscape of today with our ever-green, authority-bucking, pre-social-media common sense.
These conversations started as occasional and accidental ones, then a naturally occurring trend in my life, and gradually added up to an ongoing project and survey. The photographs in the piece are ones I’ve taken of friends, lovers, and strangers throughout the years, which together form a portrait of how I see us. As usually happens, this tapestry grew into a bit of a love letter.
If you are a 90’s kid, you will find resonance here. If you are not a 90’s kid, this may offer a glimpse from within at your children, parents, or your quietest coworkers. A guest pass into a secret place.
If it’s a bit nostalgic, I hope to be forgiven – we live in a time nightmarish to the senses and my mind sometimes seeks refuge with people who remember the world as it was before. I suspect a bit of nostalgia may dwell beneath everyone’s surface these days.
